International conference Creative Cities: Possibilities, Polices and Places

Ljubljana, 13 April 2011 – Tomorrow a conference on the significance and the potentials of cultural and creative industries in the development of European cities and regions entitled Creative Cities: Possibilities, Polices and Places will take place at the Ljubljana Castle. The conference combines the ambitions of two European projects in which the City of Ljubljana, the Regional Development Agency of the Ljubljana Urban Region, the Institute for Economic Research and the Museum and Galleries of Ljubljana are actively cooperating: Creative Cities and Second Chance.

The honorary introductory speakers at the conference will be by the Minister of Culture Majda Širca and the Mayor of Ljubljana Zoran Janković. There will follow two lectures by international experts Dr. Tom Fleming and Prof. Dr. Klaus R. Kunzmann, who will present the British and German experiences and the leading trends in the field of creative industries. The conference will end with a panel discussion at which the ideas on the development of creative cities and regions will be presented in relation to Slovenian economic, spatial and cultural policies. The panel will include: Dr. Tom Fleming, Prof. Dr. Klaus R. Kunzmann, Dr. Pavel Gantar, Sociologist and President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia; Dr. Stojan Pelko, State Secretary at the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia, Miran Gajšek, M.Sc., Head of Department for Spatial Management at the City of Ljubljana and the moderator Prof. Dr. Marjan Hočevar, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ljubljana.

The event will be the perfect opportunity to review the latest European findings and activities in the field of creative and cultural industries as well as to look at their role and significance for the development of cities and regions.
